Title: | Moisture Sensor (5–95% RH) Moisture Meter (5–100 PPM Moisture) |
Area: | Earth, Atmosphere & Environment Sciences |
Focus Area: | Water-based Technologies |
Status: | Prototype 5%-95% RH meter is developed which will be shortly deployed in north bengal tea garden. Prototype 5-100 ppm moisture meter is already being used at M/s Nisha Engineering Corporation, Kolkata. |
Patent: | Patent (IN) filed sucessfully for 5-100 ppm moisture sensor. |
Social Benefits: | Commercial %RH sensors are mostly polymeric in nature and hence can not withstand high humidity and high temperature for prolonged period of times. CSIR-CGCRI make 5%-95% moisture sensor can be used for high temperature and high humidity conditions. Commercial ppm moisture meters are not suitable for withstanding high humidity for prolonged period of times. However, some applications (detection of tecae moisture in transformer oil form gaseous phase) require prolonged exposure of the ppm moisture sensor to high humidity regularly. CSIR-CGCRI make fast recovery ppm sensors with inbuilt heater is perfectly suitable for such applications. |

Brief Description
Description : | This technology comprises an indigenously developed moisture sensing system based on alumina thin-film capacitive sensing elements, capable of measuring both relative humidity and trace-level moisture in gaseous environments. The sensor operates over a wide humidity range of 5–95% RH, while the moisture meter is designed to detect low concentrations of moisture in the range of 5–100 ppm. The sensing mechanism relies on changes in capacitance due to adsorption of water molecules on the alumina surface, enabling accurate and rapid detection. The system demonstrates fast response and recovery characteristics and is capable of operating under harsh environmental conditions, including elevated temperatures and the presence of corrosive or flammable gases. It is available in compact and lightweight configurations with flexible power supply options and digital display interfaces, making it suitable for both laboratory and industrial applications such as transformer oil monitoring, gas processing, and environmental control systems.
Key Features: • Measures relative humidity in the range of 5–95% RH and trace moisture from 5–100 ppm • Based on alumina thin-film capacitive sensing technology • Provides fast response and quick recovery for dynamic measurements • Operates reliably at high temperatures (up to ~150°C) and in harsh gas environments • Compact, lightweight design with flexible power supply options (AC/DC) • Can be integrated with digital display and control systems • Suitable for industrial applications such as transformer oil monitoring and gas moisture analysis |
