National Missions
The Smart Cities Mission is an initiative by the Government of India aimed at improving the quality of urban life through the use of technology, sustainable infrastructure, and citizen-centered solutions. Launched in June 2015, the mission focuses on developing 100 cities across India to ensure better infrastructure, sustainable urban living, and enhanced citizen services. The mission is spearheaded by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), with an allocation of ₹48,000 crore (approximately $6.5 billion) for the development of these cities.
Mission Objectives
The primary goal of the Smart Cities Mission is to create urban spaces that offer improved infrastructure and better living conditions for their residents. Some of the core objectives include:
(i) Urban Infrastructure Development: Providing basic urban amenities such as water supply, sanitation, sewage systems, and waste management.
(ii) Sustainable Urban Mobility: Developing efficient public transportation systems and promoting non-motorized transport solutions.
(iii) Energy Efficiency: Promoting renewable energy sources and energy-saving solutions in urban areas.
(iv) E-Governance: Leveraging digital technology for improved governance, including e-services for citizens.
(v) Urban Planning: Encouraging the development of green spaces and mixed land-use planning.
Key Achievements
As of 2023, the mission has seen significant progress, with over 7,000 projects completed across various cities. Some of the achievements include:
(i) Infrastructure Upgrades: Several cities have implemented smart lighting, traffic management systems, and improved public transportation networks.
(ii) Green Solutions: Many cities are integrating solar power, smart water meters, and energy-efficient buildings to promote sustainability.
(iii) Citizen Engagement: The mission has empowered citizens by creating feedback channels and involving them in the planning process, making urban development more inclusive.
