National Missions

Mission Mausam

Mission Mausam is a significant initiative launched by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, in September 2024 to enhance the country’s weather and climate prediction systems. With a total outlay of ₹2,000 crore for the 2024–26 period, the mission is aimed at making India more resilient to weather and climate-related hazards by strengthening its forecasting capabilities and observational infrastructure.

Under this mission, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), along with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the National Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF), is tasked with improving forecast accuracy across various timescales—from short-range (hours) to seasonal (months). This will be achieved through the development of high-resolution models, integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning for data processing, and enhanced dissemination systems for early warnings.

Mission Mausam also focuses on expanding the observational network by installing more Doppler weather radars, automatic weather stations (AWS), and other instruments across the country. One of its key targets is to provide hourly nowcasting updates, replacing the current 3-hour interval system, and to improve air quality forecasts, especially in metropolitan areas.

The mission will contribute significantly to disaster risk reduction, agriculture, water resource management, and public health by delivering more accurate and timely weather information. It is expected to lead to a 50% improvement in forecast accuracy by 2026, thereby supporting better decision-making for both government authorities and citizens.
