The Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (COESME), Pune

The Centre of Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education (CoESME) at IISER, Pune has been set up as a part of the Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching under the ambit of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India. CoESME aims to strengthen science education in India by engaging with various stakeholders, in particular teachers of school and undergraduate level science and mathematics. Centre helps to impart pedagogy training to teachers as well as hands training in science education to teachers and students from schools, colleges, universities and research institutes. CoESME promotes concept-based learning, with emphasis on pedagogical innovation by and for teachers.

Output & Achievements: 1. CoESME is committed to capacity building of teachers through professional development programmes designed to suit specific needs of teachers at various levels 2. CoESME has explored approaches such as inquiry-, research- and activity-based pedagogy to identify tools that can be adapted to suit age-group, language and socio-economic background of students 3. Additionally, CoESME have focused on developing and disseminating teaching methods that help students imbibe the process of science instead of just information, 4. Centre runs a series of hands-on pedagogy workshops for under-/ post-graduate science teachers, designed to introduce them to pedagogical tools that help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving abilities with support from the DBT/DST and the British Council 5. Another major activity is the induction training programme designed to prepare newly-recruited college science teachers for their teaching career 6. Centre organises programmes in specific disciplines, like workshop for mathematics teachers on LaTeX, seminar series on practice of green chemistry, workshop on fourier analysis for mathematics and physics teachers, etc, 7. Activities for school teachers including subject-specific programmes devoted to content knowledge of a particular discipline like physics, chemistry, mathematics etc.; training on making and using low-cost science toys; and workshops that focus on pedagogy 8. CoESME host national and state-level teachers’ science congresses regularly 9. Centre conducts activities for educators & scientists, hands-on science activity, educational science and mathematics camps for students
