National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED), Kolkata

National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Diseases (NICED) conducts research on acute diarrhoeal diseases of diverse etiologies as well as on typhoid fever, infective hepatitis and HIV/AIDS related epidemiological research and screening. The WHO recognized this Institute as "WHO Collaborative Centre for Research and Training on Diarrhoeal Diseases" in 1980. Aims of this Institute are to conduct research on such diseases in both basic and applied aspects. The institute also trains health professionals for better management and prevention of diarrhoeal diseases and for rapid and correct diagnosis of the etiological agents. Epidemiological investigations of diarrhoeal diseases are carried out in different parts of India. Antisera against Vibrio cholerae are raised in the institute and supplied to the national and international laboratories. Presently, specific monoclonal antiserum for detection of Vibrio cholerae O139 strains have been developed and are supplied to WHO (SEARO), New Delhi for distribution to various national and international laboratories. As WHO Phage Reference Center, this Institute receives a large number of Vibrio cholerae strains from all over the world for phage typing. Other activities of the centre include identification of enteric infections, HIV genotypes of national health priority and to develop strategies for treatment, control and prevention of enteric infections and HIV/AIDS of national health priority.

  • 1. Publications: a. NICED Annual Reports (17), NICED Library Newsletter (08), and original research articles (1791). 2. NACO-NRL: a. Evaluation of quality and performance of HIV, HBV & HCV diagnostic kits, diagnosis of HIV among babies born to HIV infected mothers using Dry Blood Spot samples and HIV Surveillance for Eastern and North-eastern states of India. a) Quality Assurance of HIV testing for ensuring highest International standard of HIV testing in the country. b) Estimation of HIV Viral load among HIV infected individuals under ART. c) Counselling and Testing for HIV. 3. Outbreak Investigations: Assessment of the Post-Flood Public Health Situation in Baramulla District, Kashmir during October, 2014 by NICED Scientists. 4. Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (VRDL). 5. Other Services to Government Agencies and Academic Institutions, on request include Phage typing of Vibrio cholera strains, monitoring of quality of properly collected drinking water for physical and microbiological parameters, identification of serotypes of enteric bacteria like Shigella spp., Salmonella Spp., Vibrio cholerae etc, and screening of respiratory tract samples for H1N1. 6. The centre has following facilities: Animal facility with Micro Ventilated Cage System and Surgical room, Biosafety Level-3 Laboratory (BSL3) to deal with avian influenza, instrumentation facility (FPLC, HPLC, LC-MS, calorimeters like ITC and DSC, FACS, confocal microscope, electron microscope, real-time PCR and automated DNA sequencer), Flow Cytometry, Electron Microscopy and Biomedical Informatics Centre (BIC).
