Technology and Data-Driven Approaches Strengthen Environmental Outcomes
Over the past decade, science, technology and data-driven governance have become increasingly important in environmental conservation, ecosystem restoration and climate resilience efforts across India. The integration of digital monitoring systems, geospatial technologies, advanced research facilities and scientific assessments has supported improvements in forest management, wildlife conservation, waste management and disaster preparedness.
In forestry and ecosystem restoration, technology-enabled monitoring platforms have strengthened implementation of afforestation programmes. Under CAMPA-supported activities, more than 3.20 lakh hectares of compensatory afforestation were undertaken between FY 2020–21 and 2024–25, supported by GIS-based monitoring systems, Digital Annual Plans and the HARIT-SANKALP platform. Forest and tree cover now extends to 8.27 lakh sq. km, accounting for 25.17% of the country's geographical area, while forests store an estimated 30.43 billion tonnes of carbon stock.
Scientific methods have also strengthened wildlife conservation. The first DNA-based All India Elephant Estimation established a standardised framework for assessing elephant populations, while the Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India covered more than 1.2 lakh sq. km of habitat using modern survey and monitoring techniques. A Next Generation DNA Sequencing facility established at the Wildlife Institute of India is further supporting wildlife genetics, forensic investigations and biodiversity research.
Technology is also contributing to environmental governance and resource efficiency. Solid waste processing has increased from 17% in 2014 to more than 77% in 2024, supported by expanding waste processing infrastructure and digital monitoring systems. Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) frameworks have strengthened recycling ecosystems across multiple waste streams, with 4,574 registered recyclers and more than 417 lakh metric tonnes of waste processed under various programmes.
Advances in forecasting and early warning systems are improving disaster resilience. The Common Alerting Protocol-based Integrated Alert System has disseminated over 4,500 crore alert messages, while applications such as Damini, Mausam and Meghdoot provide real-time weather and hazard information. Scientific tools including flood hazard atlases, the Dynamic Composite Risk Atlas and a database of 28,000 glacial lakes are supporting risk assessment and preparedness planning.
These developments illustrate the growing role of scientific research, technological innovation and evidence-based planning in strengthening environmental management and sustainability outcomes across sectors.
