Executive Summary :

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neuro degenerative disorder that causes motor dysfunctions, tremors, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability. The most common recognizable symptom of PD is Pill Rolling Tremor. Tremor, or shaking, often in a hand, arm, or leg, occurs in awake and sitting or standing still (Resting Tremor), or better understandable in body movement. So, identification and detection of the tremor is essential in the early detection of PD. An EEG abnormality in PD patients is slowing of resting state brain activity. The most common changes in PD are slowing of EEG by the speed of the frequency rhythm. The basic changes in the EMG signal caused by PD are increased tonic background activity and an alternating pattern of EMG bursts. Analysis of these bursts shows that for patients with PD there are more agonist bursts during extension movements than during flexion movements. Methodology to be adopted: In this project, investigators will design a separate standardized module for PD Patients only. The Designed Hardware will collect all the essential biophysical parameters like EEG, EMG, SpO2, Grip Strength and Tremor. All data captured of these biophysical parameters will be directly fed into an embedded hardware console where these data will be recorded temporarily for further use. Then the stored data will be taken from that console to any computing device like desktop or Smartphone and further will be sent by designed Smartphone or web application for processing to the server or can be processed locally by this designed desktop application. The Patient’s Demographic data and Clinical Assessment Data will be directly taken by the Smartphone/web/desktop application and will be stored in a local database. Finally, the Data Analysis program (Server/Desktop) will contain the Artificial Neural Network Based algorithm which will be trained with several no. of patient’s data with the help of the clinician, and after training this algorithm will be capable of identifying the different stages of a PD. Utility: The outcome of this project will be a complete diagnostics module for PD patients which will capture all essential biophysical parameters for PD patients. The designed software will help in the early detection of Parkinson’s disease hence it will be beneficial for PD patients and the clinicians also for detecting the accurate stage of the disease. This Software will further help to clinician or caretaker of a PD patient to monitor the improvement or deterioration during treatment. Justification and Anticipated Impact: The designed application will have a significant impact to the multidisciplinary scientists e.g. Neuro Scientists, Engineers and Clinicians and also the common people who are suffering from PD as well as their caretakers to know the exact condition of the patient. As this designed product will help to identify a PD patient with their stage the awareness of PD will be.

Achievements :

• Tremor identification module has been designed, which can detect various kinds of PD tremors like finger and toe tremor, Palm and Foot tremor, leg, and hand tremor. • Developed three different sensor mechanisms to measure the different types of tremors. • For measuring the finger and toe tremor, a finger mounting vibration sensor is developed. • For measuring the flat area like Palm and Foot, an airball-based sensing unit using a bladder is developed.
