Centres of Excellence and Innovation in Biotechnology (CEIB)

The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has been implementing a scheme known as Centres of Excellence and Innovation in Biotechnology (CEIB). The scheme provides funding to augment and strengthen institutional research capacity for promotion of excellence in interdisciplinary science and innovation in specific areas of biotechnology. The programme is intended for institutions with a substantial investment in, and commitment to, biotechnology research. The programme provides flexible long-term support for highly innovative research (both basic and translational in nature) in biotechnology, which creates not only high-quality publications and intellectual property but also translational outputs through mid and high end innovation. The overall aim of the CEIB programme is to establish Centres of Excellence, provide long-term support to outstanding scientists and provide institutional / departmental Programme Support. The specific goal is to enhance the innovative ability of the institutions and investigators with well-developed research programme in specific areas of Biotechnology.

It is funded by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT), Government of India. CEN offers multidisciplinary research program involving faculty from various departments. The center focuses on the design, fabrication and characterization of traditional CMOS nanoelectronic devices, novel material based devices (III-V compound semiconductor, spintronics, opto-electronics), micromechanical systems, Bio-MEMS, solar photovoltaics and polymer based devices. CEN is a resource formed to serve academic, industrial and governmental researchers in the field of nanoelectronics from across the country. The center also offers support to perform on-site fabrication using its equipment. The center's objective is to create technically sophisticated manpower for nanoelectronics research, including inter-university network. In addition to the research activities, CEN is also involved in developing technologies that can be commercially availed by the industries.

Centre of Excellence in Climate Modelling, Delhi

DST Centre of Excellence in Climate Modelling is a major new initiative taken by IIT Delhi and funded by the Department of Science and Technology, GoI to develop an India centric climate model to address certain pressing issues of climate change in India, and to educate manpower in numerical modeling of the Earth system and climate. The country needs reliable climate projection for future planning and policy making to make in-formed decisions against the backdrop of global warming and climate change. This is deliverable only when we have a reliable model - a model which is successful in capturing the present-day cli-mate of India. If we do not have a model that captures the present-day climate, how can we expect to predict and project for the future? Reliable future projections of climate demand a satisfactory numerical global model. However, all the available models possess unacceptably large biases, especially with precipitation over India (see the figure), even though they are doing reasonably good jobs over other regions and at global scale. Although the climate modeling community in the country has made good progress in the last two decades, the need of the hour is to accelerate this process and work towards building a model for India that can be used for regional climate projections.

Research Areas: Atmospheric Physics & Dynamics; Thermodynamics; High Performance & Soft Computing

Centre for Outreach Programs in Education (COPE), Bhopal

The Centre for Outreach Programs in Education (COPE) was established at the Institute in August 2015 to undertake and organize all outreach activities for the benefit of society by and large. In order to promote and popularize science education amongst youth, COPE carries out the following academic activities / social initiatives:

“Understanding Science” (In-house Outreach): To inculcate in high school students an aptitude to appreciate the role and contribution of science in the betterment of mankind. Ishan Vikas Program (MHRD initiative): To introduce school children from the North-Eastern states to Institutes of higher education in India.

Rashtriya Avishkar Abhiyan (MHRD initiative): To nurture a spirit of enquiry and creativity, and inculcate love for science and mathematics, to improve school science facilities and mentor teachers.

Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (MHRD initiative): To connect Institutes of higher education with local communities to address the developmentchallenges through appropriate technologies.

Centre for Research in Advanced Technology for Education in Science (CREATES), Bhopal

Centre for Research in Advanced Technology for Education in Science (CREATES) is a Teaching Learning Centre (TLC) established by IISER Bhopal under Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya National Mission on Teachers and Teaching (PMMMNMTT) scheme of Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD). Primary vision of the center is to develop new core technologies to aid in teaching and learning, to create new knowledge resources, to develop new technology-based pedagogies, and to develop a sustainable platform for creating, sharing and delivering knowledge

The centre’s developmental activities employ various pedagogies including immersive learning, collaborative and constructive learning, adaptive teaching and proactive teaching, with the aim of implementing these methodologies through the use of technology. Several new technological innovations are being undertaken by a diverse team of faculty members from various departments, which include development of a dynamic science and math-rich content acquisition platform, development of technology-enabled studio classroom for adaptive, immersive and reactive learning, and a technology-based assessment engine. Since its inception and subsequent approval in December 2015, CREATES has made significant progress in the aforementioned project. The center also promotes innovation in education technology through collaboration with IISER Bhopal community by creating necessary infrastructural resources for educationists and enthusiasts.

Centre for Research on Environment and Sustainable Technologies (CREST), Bhopal

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India offered support for the establishment of Centers of Excellence (CoE) for Training and Research in Frontier Areas of Science and Technology (FAST). Further, MHRD explicitly identified multidisciplinary research and training in clean environment (air, water, and land), and sustainable development as thrust areas. Accordingly, IISER Bhopal proposed a CoE, in line with the overall objectives of the FAST program and other recent endeavors by several bodies of the Government of India (e.g., MoES, MoEF, and DST), to study and reduce climate pollutants and enhance the overall sustainability of our planet. This proposal was accepted and funded by MHRD, facilitating the establishment of “Center for Research on Environment and Sustainable Technologies (CREST)” at IISER Bhopal.

The chief motivation for the establishment of CREST was the building of a structure that eventually helps understand the interactions between air, water, and earth mega systems on several scales ranging from local to global. Research Areas: Climate change; Air quality management; Atmospheric dynamics; Monitoring and management of earth resources through satellite imagery; Synthesizing environmentally benign analytical tools/molecular receptors for characterization of environmental pollutants; Applying bioremediation and other techniques of waste management; Sustainable development The research and teaching activities of CREST will encompass both theoretical and experimental approaches and will extensively involve researchers and faculty members from multiple disciplines including Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics.
