National Fellowship for Other Backward Classes (NFOBC)

The scheme has been initiated to cater to the needs of the other backward classes (OBC) candidates of the society and to provide them opportunity for undertaking advanced studies and research. The objective of this award is to provide financial assistance in the form of fellowships to unemployed students belonging to OBC to pursue higher studies leading to M.Phil and Ph.D degrees (full-time) in Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences and Engineering & Technology. The number of slots are 300 every year and selection is merit-based. There is a provision of 3% reservation of slots for providing fellowships to Persons with Disability (PwD) belonging to OBC category.

Eligibility:

i) The candidate should belong to OBC and should have passed the Post Graduate examination in concerned subject

ii) ) The candidate should be already registered for M.Phil./Ph.D. (full-time) in recognised Universities/Institutions/ Colleges in India iii) The annual income of the beneficiary/parents or guardian of the beneficiary should not exceed Rs. 6 Lakh per annum from all sources. Fellowship amount: For JRF/SRF, it is Rs.25000/28000 p.m. plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per norms. The Contingency amount is Rs.10000 p.a. for initial two yrs and subsequently Rs.20500 p.a. for Humanities & Social Sciences while Rs.12000 and Rs.25000 in the respective categories for Science. The Fellowship will be effective from 1st April of the selection year or the actual date of joining, whichever is later. The tenure of the fellowship is upto 5 yrs or the date of submission of Ph.D. Thesis, whichever earlier. Continuation of the fellowship every year for selected candidates is based on satisfactory performance as certified by the competent authorities.
