National Eligibility Test (NET)

The National Educational Testing Bureau of UGC conducts NET to determine eligibility for lectureship and award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) for Indian nationals toward ensuring minimum standards for the entrants in teaching and research profession. The JRFs are awarded to the more meritorious candidates among those qualifying NET. The tests are generally conducted twice a year, in the months of June and Dec. Eligibility: Students appearing in final yr examination or having Masters or Equivalent degree subject to certain minimum qualifying marks can apply. UGC-NET is conducted in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science & Applications and Electronic Science. CSIR conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for other Science subjects i.e. Life-, Physical-, Chemical-, Mathematical- and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences jointly with the UGC. Fellowship amount: Fellowship for JRF/SRF is Rs.25000/28000 p.m. plus House Rent Allowance (HRA) as per norms. In UGC-NET, the Contingency is Rs.10000 p.a. for initial two yrs and subsequently Rs.20500 p.a. for Humanities & Social Sciences while Rs.12000 and Rs.25000 in the respective categories for Science. In UGC-CSIR NET, annual contingency grant is of Rs. 20000. The tenure of fellowship is for 5 yr or PhD completion, whichever earlier. Yearwise continuation of the fellowship is based on the satisfactory performance of the candidates, as certified by the competent authorities.
