Achievements:

1. A specific watershed was selected in Almora district to understand the climate-water-agriculture-wildlife nexus, for which the necessary baseline data from the households was collected to analyse the interactions at ecosystem level. Further, a mobile agro-advisory service support to farmers through WhatsApp group on weather conditions and cultivation of crops is initiated in Almora district. 2. Adaptation technologies such as tress tolerant varieties, agronomic management and natural resource management, integrated farming systems etc. have been shortlisted along with the conduction of adaptation experiments for database creation. Further, scope of integrated farming systems, testing of alternate crops and varieties have been undertaken for simulating the scope for technology out-scaling. 3. Interventions in farmers’ fields showcased the technology driven improvements in yield. 4. 33 capacity building programmes have benefitted 185 students and >1200 farmers. Also, linkages with State Government’s and other initiatives have been established in Uttarkhand and Himachal Pradesh Have conducted kisan mela and farmer training prog in the area of CC science benefitting more than 1800 farmers

Brief Description

Description :

The phase-2 of NMSHE, Task Force on Himalayan Agriculture has been commissioned by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) under the National Mission on Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystems with a focus to i) develop bias corrected high-resolution climate scenario data; ii) characterize the agroecosystem changes due to climatic variability and change; iii) develop block level vulnerability assessment; iv) project impacts of climatic variability and change on Himalayan agricultural resources; v) recommend suitable adaptation strategies; vi) create adaptation evidences though pilot studies; vii) ICT tool for adaptation; and viii) capacity building programs. Sustaining agriculture in the Himalayan region form the ecological sustainability and economic viability points of view is of paramount importance. Current dynamics and interventions are generally oriented towards livelihood diversification with increased off-farm income opportunities and expansion of external development interventions. These changes in socio-economic conditions have affected sustainability of food security of mountain households. These challenges are likely to further exacerbate due to climate change. Keeping the sensitivity of the issue, the Task Force on Himalayan agriculture was commissioned to the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) to work in three distinct regions of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) viz., cold arid Himalayan region, lower and middle Himalayan region and north-eastern Himalayan region
