The invention relates to an improved process for the preparation of 2,5-dimethylfuran and furfuryl alcohol over ruthenium supported catalysts. Further, the invention disclosed a process for the selective hydrogenolysis of biomass derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) using Ru nanoparticles supported on NaY zeolite as a catalyst.
