A process for the preparation of 2-methylheptylisonicotinate of the formula 1 which comprises growing streptomyces species at pH 7 to 9 for a period of 6 days in the nutrient medium such as herein described for at least 3 days, extracting culture broth with water immiscible solvent such as herein described, evaporating the solvent to get crude oily substance, purifying the 2 methylheptylisonicotinate from the crude oil by chromatographic methods.
