An improved process for the preparation of a-Hydroxy ketone which comprises: (a) oxidising under sonification or irradiation of microwave or by stirring oxirane of general formula 1 wherein R1 R2, R3 represent any hydrogen, alkyl, aryl group or a cyclic ring with chromium based oxidizing agent in presence of halogenated organic solvents or hydrocarbon solvents such as herein described and catalyst such as hydrochloric acid or chloromethyl silane(b) recovering the products from reaction mixture by extracting with toluene, polyhalogenated, organic solvents, ether, ethyl acetate or similar solvents(c) purifying the said product by known chromatographic methods such as here described to obtain a-Hydroxy ketone.
