The salient features of the technology are: 1. Novel enzyme eliminates lime-sulfide route. 2. Simple, clean and non-polluting. 3. Enables recovery of hair as salable by product. 4. Solid substrate fermentation as against submerged fermentation. Yet to be realized. Successful large-scale trails have been carried out in a commercial tannery between December 1989 and March 1990.
