AluminiumAlloyCompositesforAutomobileandEngineeringApplications

These metal matrix composites find applications in making automobile components such as break drums, break disc, piston cylinder liners connecting rods etc. and engineering components such as sale pump components, mineral and coal processing equipment components etc. (a) The novel features of technology comprise: 1. Incorporation of hard particles such as SiC, Alumina, Silica in different matrix alloys for reinforcements. 2. Use of higher concentration of the reinforcement in the matrix up to 30% wt (as against present 10%) without affecting uniformity of distribution of particles; 3. Improved wettability of metal matrix & dispersoids; 4. Use of state of the art liquid metallurgy route employing vortex technique for preparation of composites. (b) Conventional processes use powder metallurgy and liquid metallurgy routes. The powder metallurgy route is generally suitable for small size engineering. Although liquid metallurgy route is relatively cheaper but has tendency of coagulation dispersoid particles with limitation of 10% by wt and particle sizes greater than 40 micrometer.
