Executive Summary :

This research aims to design and fabricate multiple Au(I) centers on the surface of pre-synthesized nanoclusters (NCs) using a straightforward ligand engineering technique. This will magnify the optical and electrochemical properties by creating "smart-superstructures" using aurophilic interactions between adjacent NCs. Most NCs synthesized by the wet-chemical method hold a limited number of Au(I) centers, making it difficult for them to self-assemble into superstructures via metallophilic interactions. To address this challenge, a single-step ligand engineering strategy is proposed for controlled self-assembly of NCs by introducing multiple Au(I) centers on the surface of pre-synthesized NCs. The second phase of the project will focus on the role of aurophilic interactions in enhancing optical and electrochemical properties. The "smart-superstructures" derived from NCs holding multiple Au(I) centers are expected to detect toxic metal ions, such as Hg(II) ions, selectively at picomolar or femtomolar concertation. The proposed NC-based "smart-superstructures" will be further employed to purify water by removing Hg(II) ions. The introduction of multiple Au(I) centers on the surface of acetylene thiol-protected Au25 NCs through metal coordination and unique Au(I)-alkyne bonding interactions will enhance the electrocatalytic activity of NCs by facilitating electron transfer between the electrode and active sites. The enhanced catalytic activities will be used to monitor specific catalytic reactions, such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) or hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This interdisciplinary proposal will lead to breakthroughs in various fields of science.
