Title:

RISK-PiNET: GIS Based Software Technology for Pipe Condition Assessment and Contamination Risk Assessment in Water Distribution System

Area:

Earth, Atmosphere & Environment Sciences

Focus Area:

Water-based Technologies

Status:

In process of commercialization

Patent:

RISK-PINET 1.0 Copyright No.012CR2016, RISK-PINET 2.0 SW-13985/2020

Social Benefits:

Condition assessment of buried water pipes and identification of contaminant intrusion points in water distribution networks are the two major issues in water supplyfor which Urban local bodies / water boards in India do not have any mechanism other than field investigation to overcome these issues. Municipal Corporations are in need of this technology to improve operation and management of water distribution network and ensure drinking water safety in cities.

Brief Description

Description :

This technology is an indigenously developed, user-friendly software platform designed for proactive evaluation and preventive maintenance of water distribution networks. It enables prior assessment of pipeline conditions to identify vulnerable and high-risk sections of the network, thereby supporting timely intervention and replacement planning. The system helps in reducing Non-Revenue Water (NRW), which includes losses arising from pipe bursts, leakages, and structural failures, and also minimizes the risk of contamination events in supplied water. By identifying critical pipelines and prioritizing maintenance actions, the software enhances operational efficiency, improves water quality, and supports sustainable management of distribution infrastructure. Key Features: • Modular software architecture allowing independent or integrated use of components • Includes Pipe Condition Assessment (PCA) module for evaluating structural integrity of pipelines • Incorporates Sewer Hazard Assessment (SHA) and Drain Hazard Assessment (DHA) modules for identifying external risk factors • Provides Contamination Risk Assessment (RA) to evaluate potential water quality threats within the network • Includes Pipe Replacement Cost Estimation (COST) module for financial planning and decision-making • Supports prioritization of critical pipes for repair or replacement to reduce NRW and contamination risks
