Executive Summary :

The important role of water level in the inland water bodies and rivers along with river discharge in the hydrological cycle is well known. Estimation of water levels in the water bodies and flow discharge of major streams is essential for both scientific and operational applications related to water resource management and flood risk prevention. Despite the awareness of the importance of water level and discharge information, many basins are still not monitored and, in recent decades, monitoring stations around the world have decreased. In recent years, the availability of new and freely accessible data sources from satellite sensors is steadily increasing. Several studies have already addressed the possibility of retrieving water level of inland water bodies and discharge from major stream using space based inputs, demonstrating their feasibility and great potential for difficult-to-monitor sites. Therefore, based on the above insights, multi-sensor approach for water level, velocity and discharge estimation is required. In this project methodology/algorithms will be developed and tested for estimation of water level and discharge using multisensor remote sensing based approach.
