Executive Summary :

Objective: 1. Preparation of Reference Material (Medicinal-10 and Aromatic-10). 2. Accreditation of the Institute as RMs producer based on requirements of ISO/17034-2016

Summary: Herbal drugs contribute a major share of all the recognized systems of medicine in India like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy and Naturopathy. Majority of the population are dependent on these systems of medicine. The uses and quality of these herbal plants are depends on the presence of specific bioactive molecules (Secondary metabolites). The quantity of these secondary metabolites/bioactive molecules are estimated by various sophisticated equipments like HPLC, GLC, HPTLC, GCMS and LCMS with reference materials/certified reference materials (RMs/CRMs). Further the increasing importance of natural extracts as pharmaceutically & Natural cosmetic products and their uses as nutraceutical ingredients in recent time has opened up new scope for essential oil industries besides their widespread use as flavor & fragrance ingredients. The world’s total production of essential oil is estimated at about 1.0-1.1 lakh tones and India stands at no: 3 position with share of 16-17 %. In value terms India’s position is No 2 with of share of 21-22%. For the quality assessment of herbal drugs and essential oils, the use of RMs/CRMs in necessary particularly for the quantification of secondary metabolites. At present India is importing these chemical / bioactive molecules for use as CRMs for quality assessment of various products. In view of the increasing demands of the reference standards/certified reference materials of bioactive molecules of herbal /medicinal plants and aromatic chemicals of essential oil in the country, it is proposed to start the preparation of the reference standards so that at a national level demand of some of these standards could be met. Hence it is propose to prepare the medicinal /aromatic reference standard at least 200 mg of each standard of medicinal and 50 and 100 g of aromatic bioactive molecules in the current proposal.
