Executive Summary :

Most of the deaths in case of accidents and trauma occur due to haemorrhagic shock and rapid blood loss i.e. bleeding. The currently available haemostatic agents (substances that prevent blood loss) are not much efficient, expensive and are unable to curtail microbial infection. Therefore, development of a low-cost haemostatic bandage with antiseptic and high blood absorption properties is highly desirable. The project aims to develop a novel polymeric haemostatic bandage by cryogelation technology. The swelling and mechanical properties of the bandage will be controlled by incorporation of a cotton mesh in the polymeric matrix. The developed haemostatic bandage will have antiseptic properties and capacity to stop blood flow immediately by inducing clotting.
