Executive Summary :

Scientists from I.I.Sc. Bangalore, PGIMER Chandigarh, and SASTRA University Thanjavur have developed hollow stainless-steel microneedles for administering routine childhood vaccinations. The aim is to evaluate the feasibility of using microneedles for vaccine delivery in infants. Animal experiments will establish the safety, efficacy, and immunogenicity of intradermal injections, followed by evaluating reduced dosages. Clinical trials will be initiated in humans in an age-de-escalating manner, starting with adults, adolescents, children, and infants. The project aims to enhance safety, efficacy, and minimal pain compared to conventional routes, and reduce vaccine dosage, potentially leading to cost savings in vaccine dosage, storage, cold chain, and transport. The estimated number of vaccinations is 27 million annual doses.
