Executive Summary :

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has gained attention due to its potential applications in biomimetic prosthesis, glucose monitoring, and capsule endoscopy. However, designing antennas for implantable devices is challenging due to large permittivity and losses of human body tissues. Establishing a robust wireless link between an implantable/endoscopic antenna and an external station is also challenging. In order to maintain excellent performance of low-profile biocompatible implantable antennas, novel techniques will be explored considering safety measures. The Medical Implant Communications Service (MICS) frequency band is used for ultralow-power active medical implants, while Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) bands are also used in some countries. WCE systems transmit high-resolution images in real-time, requiring a high data rate and wide bandwidth. Commercial WCEs typically have dimensions of 11 mm × 26 mm and are equipped with a miniature color video camera, light source, transmitter, antenna, sensors, and batteries. The antenna should be designed to allow maximum space for other parts of the capsule system and have an omnidirectional radiation pattern. The project aims to design ultracompact implantable and ingestible antennas with integrated rectifiers for RF energy harvesting and RF transmission capabilities for biomedical applications. Additionally, a robust, far-field link from capsule antenna to receiver antenna will be established, at least 3 meters away from patients in the endoscopy room. Simulation studies will be conducted using human models, and validation will be done on in-vitro and in-vivo systems.
