IN288300: An improved process for the electrochemical reduction of ferric to ferrous in phosphoric acid solution

The invention provides an improved process for the continuous reduction of Fe(III) present in Merchant grade phosphoric acid to Fe(II) ions. The reduction was conducted at the cathode of an electrolytic cell where the anode and the cathode compartments were separated by a diaphragm. Continuous reduction of large volume of solution was conducted in a multi compartment cell providing continuous flow of Fe(III) ions solution from a storage tank. This process is cost effective as it involves less consumption of reagent because ferrous iron is generated at the expense of electricity. It is also environment friendly because it avoids the introduction of additional matter into the system and the problem associated with their safe disposal.
