Short Wavelength Free Electron Laser Operation in a Periodic Dielectric

A layered dielectric with periodic permittivity profile is suitable for the generation of coherent radiation at short wavelengths with moderate energy electron beams. The coherent radiation generated in the device contrasts with the spontaneous transition radiation generated when electrons cross a boundary between two media. Special features: The requirement on beam energy in this device is considerably reduced as compared to a magnetic wiggler FEL operating without a dielectric.
