Executive Summary :

The proposed project is to design, fabricate and characterize the most demanding tandem solar cell of the decade that is two terminal Si/Perovskite solar cell. As first-generation solar cell, Si already achieved the maximum achievable efficiency and further improvement of the performance is quite difficult without increasing the cost. In other hand, cost is a bottleneck to encourage the common man for its ground level implementation. Hence, in this project a highly efficient tandem Si/Perovskite solar cell is proposed which has a potential to achieve more than 40% efficiency. In this project a dedicated low resistive path is proposed to design which can communicate between two sub cells to achieve high efficiency and max current. The proposed tunnel junction using poly-Si material will be cost effective and helpful for proper current matching. Full device simulation will be the first part of this project proposal where optimization of each layer with different interconnection layer will be carried out. The TCAD tool will be used to optimize the device which is available with the parent institution. Furthermore, with optimized structure, tunnel junction and contact, the device will be fabricated at host institution with the guidance of mentor. Final device optimization, characterization will be done to achieve high efficiency. At the final stage, a model of this tandem solar cell will be developed using machine learning which will be able to predict the device performance including all parameters if basic input to the model will be provided. The data obtained from the simulation and fabrication will be used as a training data set to train the model and expected accuracy of model with more than 90% is proposed to be achieved. The proposed device, model may give a new platform for the research community to enhance the further efficiency and achieve high efficiency without wasting much time on hit and trail method.
