Executive Summary :

The increasing demand for IoT and other big data applications has led to the need for mega data centers that support thousands of servers. Secondary data centers are placed to avoid data loss in unforeseen situations, such as natural disasters or human error. To replicate data in secondary data centers, a high-speed inter-data center communication network is required. Traditional techniques like WDM optical networks have disadvantages such as discrete laser sources, complex structures, high power consumption, and bandwidth inefficient systems. The project aims to design a spectrally broad, flat, tunable frequency and channel spacing, and high tone to noise optical frequency comb. Electro-optic modulator-based optical frequency combs are proposed, but they have low spectral bandwidth and can be increased by cascading multiple modulators. To address this complexity, a frequency comb will be generated and expanded using various techniques. To enhance the spectral width of the electro-optic frequency comb, four-wave mixing in highly nonlinear fiber and photonic crystal fiber will be explored. Gain modulation in SOA can also be utilized for spectral expansion. Higher-level optical modulators like DP-DQPSK and PAM-16 will be designed. In the final phase, the project will segregate every frequency line from the frequency comb to modulate individually to transmit the signal over an 80 km long fiber. This communication technology will be helpful for inter-data center communication and the backbone network for 6G applications where a large amount of data is required to transmit and receive between different central exchanges or base stations.
