Executive Summary :

Permanent magnet (PM) machines are increasingly used in modern drive systems like electric vehicles, traction, servo drives, small wind, and hydro power generation due to their high torque, power density, fault tolerance capability, and reduced volume. They also offer better dynamic performance due to higher air-gap flux density, less losses, and better efficiency. The interior permanent magnet synchronous machines (IPMSM) are popular for high-speed applications due to their wider constant power speed range and protection against centrifugal forces. However, the main limitation of PM machines is the increased cost due to the use of rare earth materials like neodymium. This proposal presents a new Steel Canned Halbach Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (SCHPMSM), which uses a Halbach PM array rotor enclosed by a solid steel can to protect the magnet against centrifugal force. The design and analysis of the proposed machine are presented and compared with conventional IPMSM. Analytical modeling using magnetic equivalent circuit is used to obtain optimal dimensions of the magnets in the Halbach array. A 10 kW PMSM is designed for performance comparison, and magnetic performance is validated using FEM. The proposed machine offers several advantages over conventional machines, including reduced magnet volume, total harmonic distortion, torque ripple, and efficiency improvement.
