Executive Summary : | From time immemorial, plants have been the source of biologically active compounds. Research all over the world has shown that they play a significant role in the drug discovery process and can aid in the development and modification of existing drugs for the treatment of various human ailments. Currently, diabetes as well as other inflammation-related diseases are among the major health problems faced worldwide which needs to be addressed. One can combine the traditional knowledge like in Ayurveda and other tribal medicines with modern isolation and characterisation techniques through Natural Products Chemistry to find novel chemical entities which can lead to therapeutic agents. The knowledge about the mechanism of action of the active ingredients could provide safer and more efficacious treatment for various diseases. Therefore, a study has been proposed which involves the bioactivity-guided isolation, characterisation and biological screening of the isolated bioactive compounds from selected traditional/local medicinal plants used in India. We have carefully chosen the plants which are edible for the study to overcome toxicity issues. |
