Executive Summary :

Double perovskites have been studied for their exotic physical properties, such as giant magnetoresistance and half metallic ferrimagnets. However, the number of well-ordered double perovskites has been limited, despite the charge and ionic size differences between B-site ions. This has impacted understanding of many predicted novel exotic double perovskites, particularly those containing the 4d or 5d transition metal ion as a constituent B-site ion. Recent research has focused on predicting novel double perovskite oxides using first principle calculations and making thin films. It is important to explore the possibility of making novel double perovskites in thin film forms using strain-driven ordering of B-site ions on a (111) oriented substrate. This concept, first proposed by the Judith Driscoll group, allows for the fabrication of novel ordered double perovskite that are predicted but rarely achieved by conventional means. The project proposal aims to access novel ordered double double perovskite deposited on a (111) oriented substrate, taking into account compositions such as LaSrMnRuO₆, a combination of LaMnO3 an antiferromagnetic insulator and SrRuO₃ and Ferromagnetic metal. Additionally, the project will investigate some of the predicted double perovskites, such as Ca₂CrRuO₆ and Ca₂CuRuO₆, as predicted recently. Fabrication of ordered double perovskites in thin films will lead to novel strongly correlated oxides that are otherwise inaccessible by conventional fabrications, potentially leading to interesting magnetic and electrical behavior.
