Executive Summary :

Recent research on intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has shown that it can intelligently program wireless propagation paths, enhancing throughput and reliability. IRS assisted orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technology is particularly effective in frequency selective channels, mitigating inter-symbol-interference (ISI). Filter-bank multi-carrier (FBMC) based on offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM) has gained significant interest due to its ability to address OFDM's shortcomings through sharp pulse shaping. This project aims to analyze and design synchronization and channel estimation algorithms for next-generation FBMC-OQAM-based IRS systems in single-user and multi-user environments. It also proposes joint transmit beamforming and phase optimization techniques for single-user and multi-user FBMC-based IRS systems. The project also considers the performance of OFDM waveforms in highly time-varying multi-path channels in vehicle-to-everything and aircraft communications. Researchers have proposed a novel modulation scheme called orthogonal-time-frequency-space (OTFS), which outperforms OFDM over a highly time-varying channel. The project aims to integrate IRS systems with OTFS to enhance the performance of existing OTFS systems in terms of spectral efficiency and bit error rate (BER). The project will develop pilot embedded channel estimation, low-complexity data detection, and phase optimization algorithms for IRS enhanced single user (SU) and multi-user (MU) OTFS systems.
