The invention  discloses a novel transition-metal-free process for the selective synthesis of 3-acetoxylated N-substituted indoles of formula (I) from  N-substituted indoles. Further, the invention discloses the synthesis of novel 3-acetoxylated N-substituted indoles of formula  (I).
