Executive Summary :

Objective: To enable indigenous Lithium ion and sodium ion battery fabrication (cylindrical and prismatic cells using CSIR-CECRI’s Technology) under both Make in India as well as Made in India policies to value-add e-mobility and renewable energy storage in India through Industries. The first of its kind development of indigenous components and sub-components required for Lithium/Sodium ion battery technology/manufacturing in India. To build up the local supply chain for raw materials as well as the equipment required for LIB/SIB assembly with a view to address the ecosystem and infrastructure requirement for Indigenous Lithium ion battery technology. Promoting the existing Technology Readiness Level of 5-6 to the extent of 8– 9 in order to help implementing ESS, e-mobility and powering of domestic appliances within a short span of less than 3 years with support from industries ranging from bulk fabrication to commercialization. Creation of Indigenous Li-ion technology fabricating facility and capacity building for cylindrical and prismatic cells for the purpose of research and commercialization.

Summary: CSIR has recently launched a Mission Mode Project on the “Indigenous Li-Ion battery production and setting up of 100 MW manufacturing Plant”. Two of its constituents’ laboratories, CSIR-CECRI, Chennai Center and CSIR-CIMFR, Dhanbad have joined hands together to come up with manufacturing plant within sort period of 2 years. This pilot plant manufacturing facility will be the first of its kind in India. CECRI will be able to produce LIB cells of different configurations and transfer the technology to Indian Industries to meet out the societal demand.
