Executive Summary :

Sewage treatment is a major problem due to the large investment required for the plant setup, operation and maintenance. A bacterial consortium based biofilm reactor has been developed which can treat municipal wastewater and agricultural runoff within 2 hours under an anoxic condition in a single unit operation, thus saving time, energy as well as space when compared to conventional sewage treatment system which requires at least 10 times more energy, 13 to 26 hours of treatment in 6 to 7unit operation. The treated water is suitable for reuse in agriculture and aquaculture. However, the emphasis of the study was on nitrate and phosphate sequestration, hence COD and BOD reduction was only assessed at the optimum nitrate and phosphate concentration. In industry as per Pollution Control Board norms, the parameters that are monitored are the TSS, COD and BOD reduction. This project would deal with performance optimization of the bacterial consortium for sewage treatment in a biofilm reactor in terms of COD, TSS and BOD removal efficiency in minimal medium and validating the finding with real effluent. Well standardized procedure would be used as cited later to carry out the work. The successful demonstration of this technology would make STP operation ecofriendly and economical, solving a major national issue of water pollution through discharging of untreated sewage into the water bodies.
