Boston – Bangalore Biosciences Beginnings (B4)

The mission of B4 is to nurture progress in the field of biosciences, including biotechnology, through the development of partnerships with leading universities and by engaging scientists from India and Harvard through exchange programs. Under continuous efforts to raise quality of Science & Technology in India, DBT and Department of ITBT and S&T (Information Technology & Biotechnology and Science and Technology), Govt. of Karnataka (GOK) signed a letter of Intent (LOI) to establish B4 in partnership with Harvard University facilitated by nodal centres in Boston, Massachusetts, USA and Bengaluru, Karnataka, India in Dec, 2015. The broad scope of LOI is to enable working together towards linking up of Institutions in the two cities and beyond to promote innovation & entrepreneurship in the areas of Genomics, Neurosciences, Synthetic Biology and Biologics, with the goal being ‘invest in people’ to grow the sector for societal benefits. An agreement between South Asia Institute (SAI), Harvard University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA and GOK supported Institute for Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB) has been signed. Under the programme, a one year Science and Technology Fellowship to a total of 5 doctoral and/or postdoctoral scholars from Karnataka will be provided for working in laboratories at Harvard. A two week hands-on course in Bengaluru, India on an interdisciplinary topic(s) for young scientists of India would also be carried out.
